CBD calms dogs with anxiety. Dog anxiety is an emotional problem in dogs that affects all dog breeds. which manifests in barking, howling, shivering, destructive behavior, and cowering or hiding.
CBD oil helps dogs with anxiety by mimicking the effects of serotonin, the feel-good hormone responsible for happiness and relaxation. It has anxiolytic and panicolytic effects that reduce environmental and post-traumatic stress in animals. Frontiers in Veterinary Science conducted a parallel design study entitled “A single dose of cannabidiol (CBD) positively influences measures of stress in dogs during separation and car travel,” which showed that CBD administration in dogs prior to stressful events significantly reduced stress-related measures such as serum cortisol, mean ear temperature, heart rate, heart rate variability, whining and a stressed/anxious behavioral factor.
Traditional treatments for dog anxiety are antidepressants or benzodiazepines, which include drugs such as Alprazolam, Fluoxetine, Clomipramine, Dexmedetomidine, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Paroxetine, and Sertraline. CBD can be used with these medications upon the veterinarian’s advice.
CBD for dog anxiety is safe and efficiently reduces stress-related behaviors. A randomized, placebo-controlled, and blinded study entitled “Long-term daily feeding of cannabidiol is well-tolerated by healthy dogs,” published in 2022, found that a dose of 4 mg/ kg was well-tolerated by the experimental group and was the basis used in the study conducted on dogs with separation anxiety.
