Jockey Club Data

“Once a year, the Jockey Club puts out a short press release giving the year’s number of fatalities and summarizing the fatality rate for dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces. It also discloses the annual injury rate for individual race tracks, if they agree, but only 35 out of 113 North American tracks are willing to disclose even that much.”

(Thorough Bred Racing Commentary)

The Jockey Club collects information on 113 American racetracks. The reported rate of thoroughbred fatalities has steadily decreased from 2.00 horse fatalities per 1000 starts in 2009 to 1.53 in 2019.

The Jockey Club only collects information on injuries that resulted in fatalities within 72 hours from the date of the race, not from animals that otherwise pass away in their stalls or during training.

“The EID statistics are based on injuries that resulted in fatalities within 72 hours from the date of the race. The statistics are for official Thoroughbred races only and exclude steeplechase races. Summary statistics for the EID are subject to change due to a number of considerations, including reporting timeliness.”

(The Jockey Club)

Races on dirt tracks consistently have the highest mortality rates; In 2019, dirt track fatalities were reported in 1.6 per 1000 starts, compared to the 1.56 and 0.93 for turf and synthetic tracks, respectively.

Horse Racing Wrongs Data

944 horse fatalities were reported from public racetracks to the non-profit Horse Racing Wrongs in 2020, a decrease from the 1119 reported deaths in 2019. However, the number of reporting tracks also decreased from 95 to 79.

“What can we do when the industry won’t disclose data that’s relevant to a scandal threatening its very existence? We can look for other data sources. And the most valuable data on North American horse racing fatalities appears on a website called Horse Racing Wrongs.

Horse Racing Wrongs is a non-profit founded by animal rights activist Patrick Buttuelo in 2013. It submits freedom of information requests to the state agencies that oversee racing and posts the results on its website. For every year since 2014, the site has published a ‘kill list’ giving the names of horses who died of injuries, along with the date of each injury, the track where it occurred, and an indication of whether it occurred during training or racing.”

(Horseracing Wrongs)

Horse Racing Wrongs only collects information on-site deaths, but does not have access to records on stall and training deaths or to private facility records. Thus, they estimate that the total number of deaths in 2020 was in excess of 2,000.

“The following racehorses were killed at American tracks in 2020. Please note, however, that these are on-site deaths only – the “catastrophically injured” who were euthanized back at the farm or after being acquired by a rescue are not reflected here. Neither, the horses who perished at the over 200 private training facilities strewn across the land. In addition, some states withheld, or claimed they had no records of, training and/or stall deaths. So, this list – roughly 1,000 strong – could easily and reasonably be doubled, leaving us well in excess of 2,000 dead horses last year.”

(Horseracing Wrongs)

Florida reported the highest number of horse fatalities to Horse Racing Wrongs in 2020, with 110 deaths from all 3 public tracks. Florida also has the highest number of private racetracks, a total of 93.
