Most importantly, remember that consistency is key when treating feline inflammatory bowel disease with probiotics—just like in humans.

It can usually take between a few days to a few weeks to see positive results from probiotics in cats with IBD.

In a study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, researchers evaluated the effect of probiotics on the course of inflammatory bowel disease in cats. The study included 24 cats with chronic active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The probiotic was administered twice daily for two weeks to half of the cats and the placebo (sugar pill) twice daily for two weeks to the other half.

While there were no significant differences between groups at baseline, those receiving cat probiotics saw a significant improvement in their clinical signs by week 6 compared with those not receiving probiotics.
