When it comes to dog beds, wood does not always come to mind. But if you could pay just a little more, there is a huge selection of excellent wooden dog beds that will blow your mind.
The beauty of wood lies in its attractiveness and durability. While some of the best on the market come made from solid oak, others are crafted from pine, an equally beautiful wood, but not as long-lasting as solid oak.
Wooden dog beds come slightly raised off the floor. As such, your pet can quickly go in and out; it is also easy to clean underneath it.
While commercially manufactured wood dog beds are the best option, you can also convert your old table or buy one at flea markets or garage sales for next to nothing. This will save you some cash and allow you to modify the bed in many ways that complement your lifestyle.
Why Make a Dog Bed End Table
Like in humans, sleep is important to a dog’s health and wellness. Dogs spend between 12 to 18 hours sleeping every day. As a pet owner, you should ensure that your pet has a safe and comfortable place to lay its head. This can easily be a DIY wooden bed that you craft on your own.
A good dog bed will prevent arthritis and joint pains that can develop when your pet sleeps on a cold hard floor. DIY wooden dog beds are fun to make, easy to maintain, and eliminate the need to worry about an uncomfortable dog. Unleash your creativity with the simple DIY instructions below, and your pet will thank you.
Materials and Supplies for Your DIY Dog Bed End Table
- Four-legged end table
- Fine-grain sandpaper
- Medium-grain sandpaper
- Four-legged end table
- Spray paint primer
- 4 Curtain rod finials with pre-attached screws
- Hammer and nails
- Drill with a 5/16-inch drill bit
- 4 furniture feet with pre-attached 5/16-inch bolts
- Safety pins
- 2 yards durable fabric
- Spray paint
- Electric kitchen knife
- 4-inch-thick foam (large enough to cover the table surface)
- Embellishments such as buttons, beads
Now that you have all the required materials and supplies, pick up the medium-grain sandpaper, sand the table to remove debris, dirt and smoothen old finishes. This will help the surface better absorb a fresh coat of paint. Sand the table a second time using fine-grain sandpaper, including the underside of the table. Next, use a damp cloth to clean up dust created by the sanding process.
Attach the 4 furniture feet to the corners of the tabletop – we are doing this to convert the table into a bed. The table should be turned upside down, the furniture piece will increase the length of the bed by a few inches. Mark two inches from the edge of the 4 corners and drill a hole. Using a /16 drill bit, drill the holes ½ inch deep. Screw the furniture feet into these holes.
Turn the end table upside down so it resembles a four-poster bed with its legs sticking up. Use a hammer and nail to create a hole in the top corner of each table leg. Next, screw the curtain rod finials into the holes.
Paint the entire unit with a coat of spray paint primer. Do this with a smooth side-to-side spraying motion. Leave the paint to dry, and repeat the process with your preferred base color of spray paint.
Customize the piece with decorative designs by using a paintbrush and acrylic paints. You can glue your preferred embellishment, such as buttons, beads, or wooden letters that denote your dog’s name.
Measure the area’s dimension (width and length) inside the table legs to determine what size of foam you need to cut. For a better fit, add 1 inch to the measurement so that the foam can fill the space once placed. Mark these dimensions on the foam with a permanent marker, then draw a straight line along the edge of the foam to show where you will be cutting.
Grab an electric kitchen knife and cut the foam to the correct dimensions. Place the foam on a work table so that the knife blades can cut below the table surface. Make the cut following the line you drew. Do this for the other side as well.
For easy removal and washing of bed cover, use this no-sew method. Add 3 inches to the initial length and width dimensions you took in step 1, then double the width. For instance, a foam of 15 inches by 9 inches would need a fabric of sizes 18 inches by 24 inches, cut the fabric to these dimensions.
Turn the fabric upside down and lay it on a work surface. Place the foam in the center of the fabric. Next is to wrap the foam in the fabric like you would, a present. Pull the lengthwise sides such that there is an overlap at the middle section of the foam bottom. Fold under the edges and secure it with safety pins.
Fold-down the fabric on each end and turn the edges inward. Pull the layers of the fabric over the foam to lay smoothly on the top of the pinned seam. Turn under the edges and hold with safety pins. Place the foam with the pinned side down.
